Get Centered
How does a little seclusion without total isolation sound to you? You know, some warm and cozy cocooning action without locking yourself away from the world in an erstwhile sensory deprivation tank. In other words living in that perfectly balanced spot where you are – far from the madding crowd – but not so far that you can’t see a movie, or go to a good book store or hear some great jazz on occasion, just some kind of tranquil bastion of peace, privacy and serenity that provides a sense of home, refuge, shelter and sanctuary without making you feel like your nearest neighbor is Bigfoot and the nearest naughty delight like some real, utterly fattening ice cream is more than a 45 mile drive away.
Time and distance are illusory notions that our brains insist on creating. Think about being back in school in a really boring class watching the clock and seeing the hand move painfully and imperceptibly slowly. Ten minutes could take a lifetime. Or try thinking about recess or something really, really new that you did that was incredibly fun. The time just flew by. Hours felt like minutes. Ever notice how your massage session is always over too soon? An hour suddenly becomes a half hour, even though the hands on a clock have gone a full circle.
When you travel somewhere new it somehow always feels longer the first time you drive there. It inevitably always feels shorter coming back. Each time you go, the distance gets shorter and shorter through some trick of changing perspective and adjustment to familiarity and routine. On a slightly different, more practical level, 30 minutes in a Highway 1 traffic jam can net you five to seven miles of forward progress. Fifteen minutes on a quiet country road with only an occasional car passing by can get you a heck of a lot farther along with a lot less stress.
So, our encouragement to you folks who somehow view Bonny Doon and its environs as the undiscovered country, somewhere far out and far away, outta sight and outta mind, is that you rethink and re-experience your own appreciation for time and distance and the way they are integrated with your own life patterns and quality of life issues. Our contention is that if you are centered in your own home, in a balanced, harmonious, happy way, then there is really no difference between living in the middle of nowhere and living in the middle of everywhere. Open your eyes to the opportunities and the blessings and the explorations that exist in your own backyards. Get to know your neighbors. Join a community of people. Discover how close things really are. Feel fortunate to live in a location so close and so central to so many incredible cities as well as so many incredible wonders of nature. Come full circle to home…because it never fails…wherever you go…there are are.
